April 2018 Newsletter

Champion of Champion events all played during April were:

Fours: Our teams were – men – Graeme Henderson (S), Denis Pihama, Bill Cruickshank and Kevin Gutschlag; women – Sandy Booth (S), Lynda Stevens, Robyn Carter & Sharon Brooking. Unfortunately neither of our teams progressed beyond the first round but only just losing their games – 14-13 for the Women and 14-12 for the men.

Triples: Our teams were: women – Chris Robson (S), Sandy Booth & Sheryl Young through to the quarter finals losing by 1 point in a very tight game against Stokes Valley; men – Brian Ward (S), Dave Goodey & Doug Parker had a bye into the second round which they lost to a very strong team from Wainuiomata who were the eventual winners.

Junior (1-5 year) singles. Our players were Lorraine and Bruce Hollow. Lorraine won her first game and despite playing well lost her second game to the eventual winner. Bruce had a bye into the second round and won his first game which took him into the quarter finals but unfortunately couldn’t progress any further.

Pairs: – Our teams were: Men – Graeme Henderson (S) & Dennis Pihama; Women – Chris Robson (S) & Gerry Wakefield. Unfortunately neither of our teams progressed beyond their first game.

Well done to all our team members for making it to the Champion of Champions and thank you to all Club members for supporting them.

Rugby Tournament: The 55th Wellington Rugby Bowls Tournament was held on Sunday 8 April, with 16 teams of 4, playing 4 games of bowls, bell to bell controlled by Les Everson. All in all it was a very successful day.

Our Pak’n Save Gala is to be held on 6th May, with only 1 green available there has had to be a limited number of entries. There is still room for 2 more teams. We have a few visiting players so Club Colours are to be worn. (Skips please inform your teams)

The Jack & Jill Pairs are to be held on Sunday, 13 May. Once again, because of only having 1 green we had to limit the number of entries. The day commences with breakfast at 8.00 am for those who sign up to participate in a very nice breakfast. This is a Mufti event.

Cards (500) has started. Play commences at 1.00 pm for anyone interested in participating.

Indoor Bowls has also commenced, so those interested in playing please have your discs in by 1.15 pm.

Many thanks to club members who assisted with the recent working bees with preparation for Green 2.

Winter League: We plan to hold a competition on the first or second Sunday in June/July/August/ September. We are seeking sponsorship for this competition. More on this shortly.

Annual Prize Giving – this is in the handbook for 19 May. However a number of members will be away that weekend so it is proposed to combine this event with our AGM – ie the AGM in the morning and prize giving in the afternoon. The date for this is 24th June.

Also in our handbook the Mixed 242 Pairs is shown as being held on 5 May – this date was not suitable and a new date will be announced soon.

Bereavement – our Social Member, Shirley Kiely, and mother of two of our members, passed away. Our thoughts are with Kerry, Karen and other family members and friends at this sad time.

Our Liquor Licence is coming up for renewal and as required by the Licensing Commission a copy of the notice is on display on the Sliding Door and on the wall in the clubhouse. An Inspector could call at any time to check that we are abiding by the terms of our Licence. Please make sure you have your current Membership card with you whenever you -if you forget please sign in on the Visitors Register.

Also on the noticeboard are the forms for Expression of Interest for Executive Committee and also for other offices/committees for the coming 2018/19 season. We urge all members to consider being involved in one or more of these.

Don’t forget to support our Sponsors whenever you can!

About Us

Petone Central Bowling Club came into being in June 2008 as a result of the merger between two former Clubs — the Petone Bowling Club and the Central Bowling Club. Both Clubs were well established in the Petone area with the Petone Bowling Club being inaugurated in 1897 and the Central Bowling Club in 1917.
