February 2017 Newsletter

On Sunday, 29th January the McArthur Henry Shield competition was held at Stokes Valley.  Team 1 – Jill Johns, Jim O’Brien, Bruce Hollow and Lynda Strutton (Skip) came 3rd in their section, whilst Team 2 -Byron Isles, Lorraine Hollow, Doug Parker and Marie Yaxley (Skip) came second in their section.

The Veterans tournament was played on 1st February.  Well done to our women’s team comprising Sandra Prichard, Sharon Brooking, Yvonne Horsley and Lynda Stevens who were the winner of their Section.

Further rounds of the Championship Triples took place on 18th February.  The next rounds will be on 11th & 12th March as required and will proceed through to the finals.

Post section of the Mixed Fours through to the final will be played on 12th March.

Our semi-finals and finals of the Championship singles took place on 19th February.  The Men’s event was won by Brian Irwin with Paddy Breslin runner up.  The Women’s event was won by Chris Robson with Robyn Carter the runner up.  Congratulations and well done to all players.

The Gibbons Trophy was held at Stokes Valley and our team of Lorraine Hollow, Doug Parker and Marie Yaxley (Skip) were runners up to Stokes Valley.  Well done team!

The Women’s Gee Shield was played on Monday and our women had 4 wins so despite a further 2 rounds to go we are so far ahead on points that we cannot ‘be caught’.

The Centre Development 2x4x2 pairs are being held on 4th and 5th March.  We have 1 Men’s Team (Ken Adam/Chris Carter) playing at Naenae and 2 women’s teams (Carol Bartlett/Margaret Connolly playing at Massey Avenue; and Kaye Wong/Marilyn Gutschlag) playing at Whitby.  Good bowling and good luck to all.

Amendment to Handbook entry for 24th and 25th March: The 2x4x2 Pairs is actually the Mixed 2x4x2.  If you wish to participate please start organising a partner and watch out for the entry form on the Club noticeboard.

Two rounds of Community League have now been completed with round 3 being played on 23 February.

The Women’s Prestige Pairs were played on 14th – 17th February.  Well done to Sharon Brooking/ Marie Yaxley for reaching the last 8.

On 17th February a large group of Blind Institute social members participated in a sporting activity day held on the Petone Recreation Park.  Our Club was their headquarters for the day for their refreshments.  A very successful day was had by all attendees.  Many thanks to our Club members who assisted with this.

The Centre Triples are being played on 25th – 27th February.  We have 2 Men’s team entered – Murray Yaxley, Brendon Nye & Paul (Ringo) Burns –playing at Whitby; Paul Terry, Kevin Gutschlag & Brian Irwin – playing at Silverstream.  We have 4 Women’s teams entered – Chris Robson, Val Fitzmaurice & Yvonne Horsley (playing at Massey Avenue; Marilyn Gutschlag, Jean Goodey & Kaye Wong (playing at Stokes Valley); Patricia Wishnowsky, Debbie Hanna & Robyn Carter; Sandy Booth, Sharon Brooking & Marie Yaxley (both teams playing at Titahi Bay).  Good bowling to all.

On a sad note we have been advised by Richard Latimer that Joan Latimer passed away on 21st February.  Funeral arrangements are yet to be made.  We will keep you informed.

Don’t forget to always check the Match Committee’s whiteboard for scheduled play information.  Our handbook is a guide only and with the number of rained off days we have had so far this season it is very hard for the Match Committee to reschedule these games.  Please cooperate with them.

We are having a change to our Thursday night raffles.  As our chicken raffles are not selling so well we now still have 2 draws but 1 will be 100 tickets and the other 50 tickets (with 5 draws).  The price remains at $1.00 per ticket.  We will also be introducing a new meat 50 ticket pack raffle with 5 draws.  There will be a limit of 2 pre-booked numbers per person to give more people a chance to enter in the raffle.

Champion of Champion events commence in March with the 1-5 yrs Singles being held on 11/12 March and the Fours on 18/19 March.  Doug Parker is our 1-5 yrs singles player – unfortunately Marie Yaxley will be overseas and unable to participate.  Our fours teams are Men: Peter Pritchard, Paul (Ringo) Burns, Brendan Nye & Paul Terry (S); Women: Dawn Cooper, Chris Robson, Sandy Booth (a replacement for Debbie Hanna who will be overseas) & Patricia Wishnowsky (S).

Trivia:

Some quotes on Getting old:

·         Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened.

·         If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself

·         Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you have not committed.

·         As you get older three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can’t remember the other two.

·         Aging seems to be the only available way to live a long life.

·         Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

·         Just remember, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed
