Petone Central Bowling Club

January 2018 Newsletter

As there is quite a lot to report for late December/January these are shown below in a bullet point form

  • The Tom & Marie Waters Memorial trophy winners were Kevin Gutschlag, Jana Rathnayake, Shirley House and Robyn Carter. Well done!
  • The Christmas Raffle was a great success thanks to Marilyn Gutschlag for her organisation of this and for anyone who helped her with it.
  • Friday Night Galas have been played over a 4 week period and have been a great success.
  • The Development 242 pairs. Robyn & Lynda were the only qualifiers and they went through to the semi finals.
  • On a sad note Lynda Strutton passed away. Lynda joined us as a First Year Novice in 2014 and was a very good bowler and club member.
  • Championship Pairs have been completed – for the women Christine Robson/Gerry Wakefield were the winners with Robyn Carter/Sharon Brooking runners up. For the men Graeme Henderson/Dennis Pihama were the winners with Ken Adam/Paddy Breslin runners up.
  • Junior Singles – for the women Lorraine Hollow was the winner and for the men Bruce Hollow was the winner with Doug Parker runner up.
  • McArthur Henry – our team – Bruce Hollow (Skip), Lorraine Hollow, Doug Parker and Jana Rathnayake were unlucky not to win two of their games but in the end they came away empty handed. With 3 players eligible for the next 3 years we can expect some great results in the future. Thanks to Ken for managing the team. Once again great support from our members.
  • For the Centre Veterans tournament we only had 1 team entered – Patricia, Lynda, Marie, and Sharon; unfortunately they were not finalists.
  • Diamond Buttons – our women continue to win the challenges with wins against Massey Avenue and Whitby this year.
  • The first of the Home/Away games against Bob Scott Retirement Home was held on 29 January –Bob Scott teams won by 5 games to 4 (despite Petone Central winning more ends!).
  • Our Men’s Division 2 Pennants team are top of their Division. The next round is 14 February – Division 2 at home and Division 3 away at Naenae.
  • Our Women’s Pennants was a washout with very wet weather meaning most games in Round 7 were not played/finished and Round 8 was not played. Only our Women’s Division 2 section completed Round 7 with a win for our team. Round 9 will be on 8th February in the morning and round 8 in the afternoon). Our Premier team are at Tawa; Division 1 at Plimmerton; Division 2 at Lyall Bay, Division 3 at Massey Avenue.  March 1 which is scheduled postponement day teams will return to the venue set down for round 7 and complete round 7 games.

Now to the present!

Gee Shield next round is on 5th February at Naenae.

There will be the normal disc draw on Tuesday (Waitangi Day) so get your discs in by 1.00 pm.

Juniors – there is a list on the Board for those wishing to participate in the Gibbons Trophy to be played on 18 February.

On 12 February we have a Rymans sponsored over 60s Gala (details on the noticeboard) – it would be good to get some more teams for this – please put your name on the list on the whiteboard if you would like to participate.

Please read the Tiger Turf notice in the Clubrooms re Dumping Bowls etc on the new green. It is extremely important to adhere to the advice in it.

We have a Men’s team – Ken Adam, Chris Carter, Kevin Gutschlag and Bruce Hollow are travelling to Christchurch to participate in the chartered clubs – good luck guys!  We also have several club members travelling to Rotorua to play in the Maori Bowls Tournament – good luck to them also.

Important: Don’t forget to use plenty of sun block and wear a hat when playing bowls and to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, water or juice.

Two well dressed lawyers went to an expensive restaurant, ordered 2 drinks and then got sandwiches from their briefcases and began to eat them.  The waitress said – Sorry Sir but you can’t eat your OWN food here, it’s against the rules.  The lawyers quietly looked at each other and EXCHANGED their sandwiches & continued their meals!  (You can trust lawyers to find loopholes in any rules).

What are you waiting for?

About Us

Petone Central Bowling Club came into being in June 2008 as a result of the merger between two former Clubs — the Petone Bowling Club and the Central Bowling Club. Both Clubs were well established in the Petone area with the Petone Bowling Club being inaugurated in 1897 and the Central Bowling Club in 1917.
