March 2018 Newsletter
The Rymans Over 60s Triples Gala was held recently. It was a most enjoyable competitive day. Our thanks go to John and Sandra for their organisation of the day; Marilyn for her sterling work in the kitchen; Kerry who prepared the lunch which was enjoyed by all and lastly Rymans for sponsoring the event.
Community League has now been concluded. 8 teams entered and our thanks go to Paddy & Marie for the successfully run competition.
The Championship Triples have been completed. For the women the final was between Debbie (S), Patricia, Gerry; and Chris (S), Sandy and Sheryl with Chris’ team the eventual winner. For the men the final was between Brian(S), Dave and Doug; and Paddy (S), Joe and Brent with Brian’s team the winners. Well done to all finalists and congratulations to the winners.
The Gee Shield final has been played between Petone Central and Silverstream. Unfortunately our team lost to Silverstream. The presentation day is Monday, 9 April.
Our men’s pennants team won the second division play-off by defeating Whitby – well done Paddy, Paul, Gordon, Kevin; Graeme, Ken, Bill, & Doug.
Our Bowls Polishing Machine has had an overhaul (many thanks to Bruce Hollow); polishing cloths have been dry cleaned and it looks as good as new. Please look after this machine – ie don’t clog it up with grippo or like products.
Just a reminder – our EFTPOS machine is not an ATM machine. It is there for members to pay their subscriptions or other club expenses and also for bar spending. If there is enough change in the till members can withdraw small amounts of cash only. If all the cash is taken out our Treasurer has to take a trip to the Bank to get cash and that is definitely not what the machine is for.
The Easter 242 Pairs have been played – we had 2 men’s teams – Paddy/Ringo; & Chris/Ken; and had 4 women’s teams – Robyn/Sharon, Chris/Val; Marilyn/Bev, Patricia/Debbie. We had 1 men’s team and 1 women’s team qualify – Chris & Ken and Chris & Val. Chris & Ken reached the quarter finals whilst Chris & Val went through to the semi finals. Well done to both teams.
Debbie, Dawn & Patricia were selected to play in the Women’s Masters played at Central Levin on 12 & 13 March; and Paddy was selected to play in the Men’s Masters team played at Palmerston North the same weekend. Congratulations to them on their selection.
This Sunday we host the Annual Rugby Tournament which will mean 1 full green and lots of people at the Club that day.
Sadly this week we farewell Marguerite & Bill Boulter who are moving to Ireland. Our best wishes go t them for the future.
Nomination forms for The Executive Committee are now on the Noticeboard and soon forms for the other positions will be too. Please start thinking now about being on the Executive or on other Committees etc. A lot of members say they haven’t got the time or they have already been on these committees – yes it does take time but we can all find/make the time to take on these roles or offer to assist the people who do put themselves forward. If no-one takes them on the Club will literally die!
Many thanks to those people who assisted with the working bee on green 2 on Saturday by removing the stones from the ditches. This was necessary to be prepared for the laser levelling. Green 2 has now been ‘scalped’ and we are looking forward to having two good playing surface greens for next season.
Saturday, 7 April is the Champion of Champion 4’s, our women’s team – Sandy (S), Lynda, Robyn & Sharon are at Johnsonville and the men’s team – Graeme (S), Denis, Bill (Ken Adam will be a substitute for Bill) & Kevin are playing at Titahi Bay. Play commences at 8.30 am. Good luck/good bowling to both teams.
Results of the Easter Pairs Classic were – Division 1: Dave & Jean 1st and Robyn & John 2nd. Division 2: Byron & Jilly 1st and Shirley & Peggy 2nd. A great two days Bowls enjoyed by all and it will be programmed to be played again next year. Many thanks to Dave & Jean for organising this.

Petone Central Bowling Club came into being in June 2008 as a result of the merger between two former Clubs — the Petone Bowling Club and the Central Bowling Club. Both Clubs were well established in the Petone area with the Petone Bowling Club being inaugurated in 1897 and the Central Bowling Club in 1917.
