May 2017 Newsletter
Recently the final of the Mixed Fours was played. The winners were Gerry Wakefield, Bill Cruickshank, Patricia Wishnowsky, Graeme Henderson (S). Runners up were Mark Stevens, Carole Bartlett, Bev Smith & Sandy Booth (S). Well done to all.
The Champion of Champion 1-5 yrs singles were played at Naenae on Saturday 6th May. We were represented by Doug Parker and Marie Yaxley. Both had a bye into the second round. Doug narrowly lost his game whilst Marie won hers and went through to the quarter finals and lost the game with a close finish. Well done both of you.
The Centre 1-5 Yrs v Kapiti event was held at Upper Hutt on Sunday, 7th May. Marie Yaxley and Lorraine Hollow were selected to play. Well done!.
The Centre 1-5 yr Quadrangular tournament had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Both Marie Yaxley and Lorraine Hollow had been selected to play in this.
The annual Jack & Jill event was held on 7th May. We had 14 teams entered and a good day of bowls was had by all. Chris & Robyn Carter were the winners of the event. We had a barbecue at the completion of bowls and this was very enjoyable. Many thanks to Heather & John O’Brien, Alan McLeod and Sandra Prichard for assisting with the food preparation and cooking the BBQ food. If I’ve missed anyone out – my apologies!
Our greens are now closed for winter maintenance.
Our winter programmes are under way. Cards (500) have started on Monday – 12.45-1.00 pm start – more players are very welcome and Indoor Bowls has also commenced – names in by 1.15 play commencing 1.30 pm.
Our Annual Presentation of Trophies was held on 27th May. Whilst it was disappointing more members didn’t come to this those who did had a very enjoyable afternoon. Many thanks to Sandy, Marie and Robbo for preparing our afternoon tea which was enjoyed by all attendees.
It was good to see Joan Porter (one of our Life Members) come along for the afternoon. Joan will be 99 in a few weeks time and was looking very well – and she told us ‘she still has all her marbles’! She certainly does.
Lists of winners, runners up etc are on the Club’s noticeboard.
If you haven’t already done so please put the date of our AGM in your diaries/calendars. It is to be held on 25th June at 10.00 am in our Hall.
Nominations have now closed for our Executive & Management Committee. It is pleasing that we have nominations for President (Chris Carter), Vice President (Sandy Booth), Secretary (Glenda Grant), Treasurer (John O’Brien) and 3 standing for the Management Committee (Bruce Hollow, Kerry Kiely & Christine Robson). We still need 1 more member for this Committee and nominations will be called from the floor at the AGM. It would be good to see another female on the committee!
Expressions of interest nominations close on 7th June – there are several nominations already received. It would be good to get some more though. More nominations will be sought at the AGM.
A big thank you to all our Executive Committee, Match Committees, Catering, Cleaning, Greens staff, Gardeners, Lawn mowers, Bar Staff and any other volunteers who have assisted throughout the Season. Without you people the Club could not run successfully. Also to any other person(s) who have helped around the Club that may have been missed.
Trivia – well in this case perhaps not trivia.
The following quotes were found ‘on-line’ and are very appropriate:
- Here’s to all volunteers, those dedicated people who believe in all work and no pay.
- Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless but because they are priceless.
- Volunteers are paid in six figures …S-M-I-L-E-S.
- Those who can do, those who can do more, volunteer.
- The broadest, and maybe the most meaningful, definition of volunteering: Doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good.
- I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something, and
It would be good to see more members volunteering.
What are you waiting for?
Petone Central Bowling Club came into being in June 2008 as a result of the merger between two former Clubs — the Petone Bowling Club and the Central Bowling Club. Both Clubs were well established in the Petone area with the Petone Bowling Club being inaugurated in 1897 and the Central Bowling Club in 1917.
