Petone Central Bowling Club

October 2017 Newsletter

October has been a busy month with Interclub commencing and Championship Fours also commencing.  Unfortunately the weather has affected the Champ Fours but hopefully it will now settle down and we can get back on schedule.

The winners of the Mixed Fours were: Graham Henderson, Patricia Wishnowsky, Bill Cruickshank and Gerry Wakefield.  Congratulations to them.  The runners up were Chris Robson, John O’Brien, Yvonne Horsley and Alan McLeod.

The first rounds of the Women’s Gee Shield competition took place on 2 October- our teams won 3 out of 4 games.  Well done ladies.

Mixed pairs we only had Patricia and Tony (Composite) qualify but they went out early in post section. Well done to those that took part.

On Labour Day a mixed pairs combo 4 games of 10 ends were played with different formats for each game.  A great day was had by all with eventual winners Robyn & Chris, runners up Kaye & Paddy and third Lynda & Mark.

Work on green 1 starts this week – please be aware of safety issues with machinery, changes to green access and restrictions on where we can walk.

During the period we only have 1 green available for play, if pennants are being played on any particular day we ask that club members participating in our normal Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday roll-ups wear their club uniforms as a courtesy to the Pennants players.

Owing to the greens work the some Interclub games have been transferred.  A copy of the changes is on the notice board.  Skips please take note of the changes and make sure your teams are aware of them.

Congratulations once again to Lorraine Hollow who has been selected to play in the 1-5 WKWM event which takes place on 3 November at Paraparaumu.

Petrol money.  It is customary amongst members (the ladies in particular) to make a contribution towards the cost of petrol and running costs to the driver of the car taking them to events – eg Pennants, Interclub, Gee Shield etc.  The Executive set a guideline of $2.00 pp for going to local clubs and $2.50 pp for clubs further afield.  These figures are a guide only and if you consider it is not a suitable amount it is up to the passengers/drivers to come to an agreement.

The men’s Thistle Triples are scheduled for 24 November – by then we will only have 1 green in action so get your entries in asap or you could miss out.

The Future of Lawn Bowls in the Lower Hutt Valley.  Representatives from the Hutt, Massey Avenue and Petone Central bowling clubs met informally recently to discuss where the sport of lawn bowls might be in the Lower Hutt Valley in 5-7 years’ time.  It was agreed the decline in playing membership was unlikely to be arrested and as well that the new Naenae facility has changed the dynamics of our sport in the Hutt Valley.  It was unanimously agreed by those at the meeting that a draft business study be prepared for discussion by the Clubs, looking to the possibility of a new club development in the next 5-7 year time frame.  The study will investigate objectives/goals, impacts both within the Bowls community and socially and options to secure a sustainable future for Bowls within the Lower Hutt Valley.  The object of this notification is to place the facts before all members of the 3 clubs concerned and dispel any rumours or preconceived ideas that may already exist.

Entries for the Open singles and Prestige Pairs have now closed.  In the Men’s Open Singles we have Stu Harvey, Paul Burns & Ken Adam participating and in the Women’s Marilyn Gutschlag and Jane Henderson.

For the Prestige Pairs we have Lynda & Sharon and Judy & Val participating.

Skips – a reminder: please contact your teams when any cancellation or changes of venue etc are announced – it is better that teams here this more than once than not at all.

Don’t forget our Sponsors – check your handbook or the list above the Bar in the Clubrooms (yet to be updated).

About Us

Petone Central Bowling Club came into being in June 2008 as a result of the merger between two former Clubs — the Petone Bowling Club and the Central Bowling Club. Both Clubs were well established in the Petone area with the Petone Bowling Club being inaugurated in 1897 and the Central Bowling Club in 1917.
